Visit information - 28th May 2012

CHURCH OF ENGLAND GUILD OF VERGERS – York Branch

Dear Member,

I am writing with details of our first visit of 2012 to two churches on the outskirts of York, which are very different in many ways.

The date is MONDAY 28 MAY

10.30 for 11.00am      ST MARYS CHURCH, SAND HUTTON, YORK.
This church was built in 1847 and replaced the earlier church of St Leonards, the ruins of which are immediately adjacent. This is one of 10 churches which form the Sand Hutton Group of churches and the current Rector, Rev Ivan Howitt, lives in the village.
Light refreshments will be served on arrival. We will celebrate Communion at this church following a short tour of the building and the ruins.

1230pm Lunch (own choice) at the Four Alls pub about 5 minutes drive from the church and 10 minutes from Bossall.

2.15pm  ST BOTOLPHS CHURCH, BOSSALL, YORK
Another of the churches in the group and reputed to be the smallest parish in the York Diocese. This church was completed in 1147 and is cruciform in shape. The setting is wonderful with views of the Wolds from the churchyard and the interior is stunning as well, with stained glass by Kemp and a most interesting reredos. There are just a handful of houses in the village comprising The Hall, former Rectory and four dwellings.

3.00pm approximately  Disperse.

PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU ARE COMING BY   23rd MAY

SAT NAV:-     Sand Hutton     YO41 1LB
                        Four Alls Pub   YO32 9TW
                        Bossall             YO60 7NT

Sand Hutton is 3 minutes off the A64 and is 8 miles from York. Church is on the left up a short drive.

Unfortunately the Rector is ill, but his churchwardens will be looking after us on the day.

Minutes - branch AGM 16th Jan 2012

 Date: 25 January 2012

CHURCH OF ENGLAND GUILD OF VERGERS – York Branch

Dear Member,

I hope you had a relatively quiet Christmas after all the extra work that went on in churches beforehand! Let us hope that 2012 will be a good year!

The Branch AGM held on 16 January at York Minster was well attended and useful discussions took place on a range of topics raised.

The salient points were as follows:-

  1. This Branch has offered to host the York Province Festival at Beverley Minster in May 2013.

  1. A programme of visits for 2012 will be arranged and several venues have been offered by members. These were discussed bearing in mind the increasing cost of travelling to meetings.

  1. The finances of the Branch are in good health, but if any member has an email address and is still receiving Branch mail by post, could they please send me an email so I can save even more on postages!

  1. All Branch Officers were re-elected unopposed.

Area Leader:             Doreen Cook  (2011 – 2013)

            Branch Committee
Chairman:                    Richard Babington
Vice Chairman:            Stephen Rutherford
Treasurer:                    Richard Babington
Secretary:                    Rosemary Babington
Chaplain:                      Rev. Marian Gardner
Publicity officer:            Neil Pickford

  1. Our National Secretary is resigning at the National AGM and a replacement is being sought.

Subscriptions
The cost of producing the Virger magazine has risen to a level where it has been necessary to increase the charge to Members by £2.00 per year. This still represents fantastic value at only £ 1.75 per issue! No increases in the Capitation paid to National Council or the amount paid to Branch Funds have been made.

2012 Subscription –             Full member                        £21.50 (£19.50)
                                    Associate member                      £15.50 (£13.50)

Without magazine            Full Member                            £14.50
                                    Associate Member                      £ 8.50

Subscriptions were due on 1 January 2012 and I would appreciate payment as soon as possible so that the Branch return can be completed in good time. This Branch has always been in the vanguard in this respect, so please help me to complete a speedy return this year as well! Thank you to all those that have already paid - (40%).

If you have a query concerning your 2012 subscription, please let me know as soon as possible.

Stephen Rutherford
Our Branch Vice Chairman is leaving his job as Verger at St Aidan’s Garrison Church, Catterick Camp after 31 years service, due to financial cut backs at the Camp. St Aidan’s is a small church with a big heart, holding services for various faiths as well as having a modern and very busy Church Hall. A farewell service is being held at 10.30am on Sunday 25 March and Stephen has invited Branch Members to attend both the service and a reception afterwards. Anyone wishing to attend should contact Stephen as soon as possible at staidans.church@btconnect.com  or 01748 824294 before the end of February. This is obviously a difficult date, but we have plenty of notice and I hope some of you will be able to be there with Rosemary and myself. Robes will be worn for this service.

Dates for your 2012 diary

York Province Festival at Newcastle – 8 May

Annual Training Conference at Malvern – 5 – 9 August

Canterbury Province Festival (80th birthday of the Guild)
                             at Canterbury Cathedral 24/25 September.

Dates of Branch visits will be notified as soon as they have been arranged.

The Committee look forward to receiving your support for a further year and to seeing you on the visits.

Yours sincerely,

Richard Babington

R J N Babington – Branch Treasurer.
